Google Play closed-testing opt-in link not working: what to check

Short answer: confirm that the closed release is published, the tester is using the invited Google account, Group membership is complete, the test is available in the tester’s country, and enough time has passed for Google Play to publish the link.

If Play Console does not show an opt-in link

Google only displays the opt-in link when the app status is Published. Draft and Pending publication releases do not have a working tester invitation yet. Open the closed track and verify that the release was actually rolled out rather than saved as a draft.

If the tester sees “Item not found”

1. Open Play Store and switch to the invited Google account.
2. If you use Google Groups, join the Group with that same account first.
3. Open the opt-in link, accept the programme, and only then open the install link.
4. Check whether the tester’s country is included in the track’s availability.
5. Check the device catalogue for an exclusion or incompatible Android version.

If you just published the first testing release

Wait before rebuilding everything. Google says test links can take several hours to become available after the first publication, and later changes can also take several hours. Repeated edits during propagation make it harder to identify the real cause.

If the tester is already on internal testing

A person opted into internal testing is not eligible to receive the open or closed track. They must opt out of internal testing and then opt into the closed test. This track rule is easy to miss when the same people helped with your first technical build.
